You can speak up and be gentle at the same time.
Every now and then I find myself itching to speak my mind on a touchy subject or topic. At the same token there is a general spirit of carelessness that has to be checked and redirected to a higher level of emotional intelligence. In other words, being brutally honest doesn’t always have to be so...brutal. Sprinkling a little sugar on something to make it taste better doesn’t make you fake, it makes you emotionally intelligent. When I sat with the Nia group at Wise High School I reminded them that we don’t fight to win the argument, we fight to win the people. So this week when you find yourself needing to speak your piece, try to speak THROUGH PEACE. Challenge your vernacular and mental capacity by taking the higher road and using your words wisely. Difficult conversations are inevitable, but being a difficult person isn’t. Find a way to say it that doesn’t hurt so bad this time. I believe in you.
